March into Spring: where do we start?

Here we are, standing on the seafront at Minehead in Somerset, about to (virtually) hike 630 miles around the coast to Poole in Dorset

We're kicking off our March into Spring challenge this week in Minehead, North Somerset.

For most hikers, they are heading to Porlock Weir as their first overnight stop - a seemingly short 16km/10 miles along the North Somerset coastline. But don't be fooled - the steep coastal inclines start here, and they start in true SWCP style...

This statue on the seafront marks the start of the trail. We'll be keeping the sea on our right from now on until the end of our trip!

You might be forgiven for thinking that Minehead is all about Butlins - but did you know that in the 18th century it had a thriving harbour sending ships around the world? It wasn't until the 19th century that it became a holiday resort (like so many Victorian seaside towns that we'll be passing through).

From the statue, we'll be heading along the promenade past a lifeboat station. At the end, the climbing begins, zigzagging up a steep wooded path to the top of the cliff. Once at the top, we'll be hiking away from the cliff edges onto the moorland.

So who is going to be the first person to start us off along the prom and up the steep cliff ? Don't forget to log your miles with us and we'll keep you updated with our progress :)
